These are just a few notes from harton driving school to give you a idea of what to expect when you go to sit a practical driving test.
When you arrive with Harton Driving School for the driving test you will need to have both parts of your driving licence (if old style none photo id licence, you will need a valid passport as well) ,your theory pass reference number (printed on theory certificate when you pass theory) ,its also a good idea to make a note of your booking reference as if a problem with the booking happens you may need it.
Upon the examiner greeting you he/she will ask you the candidate to read and sign a declaration on the test sheet. He/she will check you licence for validity and also visually check your identity with the photo on your licence.
The driving test will include an eyesight test, You will be required to read a new style number plate from a distance of 20.5 meters.failure to do so will mean the end of the test as it is a legal requirement for candidates to be able to see this distance while driving (with glasses if required) .If you pass the eyesight test you will then be asked two vehicle safety questions, Known as the 'show me/tell me' question. To find out more about the questions you may be asked, please click here
You will be examined closely on your general driving skills(forward planning , road proceedure, use of msm routine, ect) throughout the test, although the examiner will try to be as discreet as possible while making these observations, as not to distract or make you feel nervous, you will be asked to complete one of a possible five manoeuvres, turn in the road, reverse round a corner(left or right) bay parking or parallel parking round a vehicle, you may also be asked to carry out a hill start, a controlled stop or pulling away at a angle.
The examiner will have you out on test for around 40 minutes, In which time you can make up to a possible 15 minor driving faults, as long as those faults are spread around the examiners marking sheet, but an accumulation of marks in one box(usually 5 but at the discretion of the examiner) will result in the minor faults being upgraded to a serious fault and failure, any more than 15 minor faults, a serious or dangerous fault will result in failure of the practical test.
At the end of the test ,pass or fail, the examiner will give you a debrief of your driving faults, he will also ask you if you would like your instructor to hear this, its a good idea to have your instructor hear the debrief as he/she will hear first hand what happened and be able to structure remedial lessons to fix faults,at the time of writing this the current cost of a practical test is £62 for a weekday and £75 for a weekday evening or weekend rate(if the test centre does these)
